Rep. Elise Stefanik, age 40, was first elected to New York's 21st District in 2014 and is the House Republican Conference Chair, the youngest woman to hold that post.

"Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter," Trump said in a statement to CBS News.

CNN first reported the news late Sunday, Nov. 10.

Trump also decided on another native New Yorker for a key position in the new administration, naming Tom Homan, age 62, the former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director, as border czar.

In announcing the border czar appointment, Trump said, "Homan will be in charge of all deportation of illegal aliens back to their country of origin."

Homan served as police officer in West Carthage in upstate New York before becoming a border agent.

Stefanik has become known for heated confrontations with witnesses at Congressional hearings, including former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in a subcommittee hearing on the COVID pandemic.

After questioning Cuomo in a fiery back-and-forth exchange, Stefanik released a statement saying in part: "Disgraced former NY Governor Andrew Cuomo stonewalled the investigation of the House COVID Select Committee, refused to apologize to the families of the more than 15,000 New York seniors killed due to his COVID nursing home directive, and openly committed a felony by lying to Congress.

"As I have said for years, Cuomo is a corrupt criminal who belongs behind bars. America heard his lies firsthand when he knowingly covered up his responsibility for the deadly nursing home executive order, doubled down on his disastrous policies, refusing to accept culpability for his crimes."

A native of Albany, Stefanik's Congressional district includes all or parts of Albany, Fulton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Schoharie counties.

Stefanik's appointment will require Senate confirmation while Homan's will not.
